Take action.
Shelter House invites you to find a sleeping bag, a couch, a tent, a space on the floor of your home, or ANYWHERE to raise awareness and much-needed funds to support individuals experiencing homelessness in our community; they need our help now more than ever. The Sleep Out is not about pretending to be homeless; it is meant to be a night of solidarity for those individuals and families who experience homelessness.
COVID-19 has required that we temporarily suspend all non-essential visits to Shelter House, pause our volunteer program, and postpone in-person fundraising activities. But the hundreds of adults and children facing homelessness in our community still need us. So.
We’re taking The Sleep Out online.
How it works.
Join Shelter House’s The Sleep Out: Virtual Edition in your backyard, living room floor - wherever. This is not about pretending to be homeless, this is about dedicating one night of being uncomfortable and vulnerable to benefit the many men, women, and children in our community who are without proper shelter. Be a catalyst for change and join us for The Sleep Out benefiting Shelter House on July 11th.
Sign up to Sleep Out - virtually.
Band together with coworkers, close friends, or family members to form a team. Together, you can shift your participation into high-gear to support Shelter House.
Creating a personal campaign to support the organization you care about most gives you a chance to do something small, but make a big impact. Spread the word about Shelter House and get your friends and family to rally behind a cause close to your heart.

Event Night.
Use this toolkit to create a meaningful Sleep Out experience from wherever you are: the floor of your apartment, in a backyard if you have access, or even on a friend’s couch.
Joining Shelter House’s inaugural virtual Sleep Out will mean cueing up a few videos with stories from our frontline staff, participating in a reflection activity, and finding a space to sleep on the floor. Personalize your experience by inviting others to join you, deciding to shut off your heater or forgo blankets for the night, saying no to pajamas in favor of the jeans you wore that day, or giving up your phone charger.
Remember, the Sleep Out is not about pretending to be homeless; it is meant to be a night of solidarity for those who experience homelesness. We are stepping outside of our comfort zones to send a message to all the men, women, and children who experience homelessness - that we care.
Special Announcement.
Acclaimed Journalist Lauren Sandler will hold a reading and discussion as part of Shelter House's 2020 The Virtual Sleep Out.
Dan-el Padilla Peralta, author of Undocumented: A Dominican Boy's Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League, describes the book as "Meticulously crafted and brilliantly reported, Lauren Sandler’s This Is All I Got exposes the Kafkaesque cruelties of America’s disintegrating social safety net. It is a gut-punch of a narrative, an electrifying summons to policy action, and an instant classic."
Buy a copy of This Is All I Got today from Prairie Lights Bookstore, or reserve the e-book or pick up a copy via curbside delivery at the Iowa City Public Library or Coralville Public Library.
