Shelter House Book Sale March 28-29

The 2020 Shelter House Book Sale is right around the corner at the Johnson County Fairgrounds! Admission is free, but dedicated book worms can purchase a $10 Early Entry pass for admission before the general public at 10am.

If you have books you would like to donate, they can be dropped off at building B at the fairgrounds starting February 23. Donation drop-off will continue every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 10am-2pm and Sundays from 2-4pm through the week of the sale!

We are also looking for volunteers to support and help out at the Book Sale. For more information about the Book Sale, click here!

  • All of January: SuperCuts is donating $1 per product purchase or haircut to Shelter House for Cutting for a Cause. Visit Coralville, Cedar Rapids - Wiley Blvd, or Blairs Ferry Rd locations to participate in Cutting for a Cause!
  • Every Friday, 12:30pm - 4:00pm: We need several weekly volunteers to help move furniture for clients who are moving into their permanent homes! Contact Gina Woolsey for more information - gina.woolsey@shelterhouseiowa.org

Finland ends homelessness with Housing First model

In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. The reason: The country applies the “Housing First” concept. Those affected by homelessness receive a small apartment and counseling – without any preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected thus make their way back into a stable life. And: All this is cheaper than accepting homelessness.

In 2008 you could see tent villages and huts standing between trees in the parks of Helsinki. Homeless people had built makeshift homes in the middle of Finland’s capital city. They were exposed to harsh weather conditions.

University of Iowa Hillel students make meals for Shelter House​

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Many people across eastern Iowa participated in service projects to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday- including students at the University of Iowa Hillel.

Students made lunch for people staying at the Shelter House, and planned ahead making valentines for others at the Iowa City Senior Center.

"We thought because today is MLK Day, we want as a Jewish community, to contribute something back," said Caleb Marx, a student at the University of Iowa and the President of the student board of the Iowa Hillel.
